Kazakhstan Government Steps Down, Sklyar Named Interim PM
In a surprise move, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has accepted the resignation of his entire government, according to the presidential website.
Roman Sklyar, previously an advisor to the president, will assume the role of interim Prime Minister, replacing Alikhan Smailov who held the position for the past two years.
No official reason for the government's resignation has been given. However, media outlets like Vlast.kz report that a key Cabinet meeting with the president is scheduled for February 7th, where the outgoing government is expected to present its annual report. This suggests the resignations could be linked to performance evaluations or potential policy disagreements.
Smailov took over as Prime Minister in January 2022 following large-scale protests that rocked the country. He previously served as Deputy Prime Minister.
The sudden government reshuffle adds a layer of uncertainty to Kazakhstan's political landscape, particularly with upcoming parliamentary elections planned for this year.
