Romania Stands Firm: Unwavering Support for Moldova's EU Bid

Romania's Foreign Minister, Luminița Odobescu, reaffirmed her country's steadfast commitment to Moldova's European Union integration during a meeting with her Moldovan counterpart, Mihai Popșoi, in Bucharest.

"The Republic of Moldova can firmly rely on Bucharest's robust, dynamic, and multifaceted support," declared Odobescu. "We remain fully committed to solidifying our bilateral strategic partnership, achieving tangible progress towards European integration, and providing steadfast assistance to Chișinău in advancing crucial reforms."

Odobescu reassured Popșoi of Romania's continuous dedication to initiatives benefiting Moldovan citizens and its long-term efforts to ensure Moldova's position as a top priority on the EU agenda. She emphasised Romania's commitment to providing both political and technical support in various sectors.

Furthermore, Odobescu commended the significant and commendable reform efforts undertaken by Moldovan authorities, particularly in areas critical for EU membership.

This meeting marked Popșoi's first foreign visit as Foreign Minister. He emphasised the productive discussions regarding the strategic bilateral dialogue and ongoing Moldovan-Romanian cooperation. Popșoi expressed sincere gratitude for Romania's unwavering support within regional and international organisations.

"Given the challenging geopolitical climate created by the unjust war waged by the Russian Federation in Ukraine, maintaining close and frequent communication with Romania is paramount," stated Popșoi. "This war directly impacts both our countries and the wider region. While the past two years presented immense challenges for Moldova, they also offered an opportunity for positive transformation on the path to EU integration."

Popșoi acknowledged Romania's crucial role in developing, modernising, and strengthening Moldova's statehood. He expressed deep appreciation for the consistent support provided by Romanian diplomacy, government, parliament, presidency, and MEPs, whose contributions were instrumental in securing the European Council's momentous decision on December 14 to initiate accession negotiations with Moldova.

Popșoi is currently on a working visit to Bucharest, at Odobescu's invitation, from February 5 to 6.
