Macron and Zelenskiy Sign Security Pact, Boosting Military Aid to Ukraine
French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy signed a bilateral security agreement on Friday evening in Paris, pledging long-term civilian and military support to Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia, as reported by Agepres.
Under the agreement, France commits to providing "up to three billion euros" in "additional" military aid to Kyiv in 2024, following support estimated at 1.7 billion in 2022 and 2.1 billion in 2023.
Paris specifically mentions strengthening "cooperation in the field of artillery."
The agreement also includes "providing comprehensive assistance to Ukraine" to "restore its territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders," "active deterrence and measures to be taken against any new aggression" from Russia, and "support" for Kyiv's membership in the European Union and "interoperability with NATO."
"France confirms that Ukraine's future membership in NATO would be a useful contribution to peace and stability in Europe," the new pact states.
Zelenskiy's European tour was overshadowed by the announcement of the death in prison of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, the number one opponent of President Vladimir Putin, who already rules Russia with an iron fist, exacerbating tensions with the West and further extinguishing any hope of an opening to Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy travelled to Berlin and Paris on Friday to sign security agreements aimed at guaranteeing his country long-term military and financial support, as it struggles to repel Russian aggression.
Zelenskiy is scheduled to meet with US Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference. He will deliver a speech and hold several bilateral meetings at the annual gathering of the geopolitical elite. Among those attending in the Bavarian metropolis will be US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
