Romania's Stance on Ukraine: No Troops, Solid Support

President Klaus Iohannis stated on Tuesday, during the joint statements with the President of Montenegro, concerning Emmanuel Macron's recent statements about deploying troops to Ukraine, that “Romania will not send combatants to Ukraine and that we support Ukraine in various ways and will continue to do so”.

The head of state noted that the possible deployment of combatants to Ukraine cannot be considered under a NATO mandate, as Ukraine is not a NATO ally, but rather, if there are bilateral agreements between a state and Ukraine on any issue, then these matters strictly fall under the bilateral understanding.

When questioned about the statements made by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, President Klaus Iohannis remarked, "A potential deployment of soldiers to Ukraine cannot be considered under a NATO mandate, as Ukraine is not a NATO ally. Otherwise, if there are bilateral agreements between a state and Ukraine on any topic, then these matters strictly fall under the bilateral understanding."

The head of state emphasised, "Romania will not deploy troops to Ukraine."

"We support Ukraine in various ways and will continue to do so. Romania stands with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, and we will continue our support as long as necessary," added Iohannis.

On February 26, at an International Conference in Paris attended by heads of state and government, Emmanuel Macron remarked that the deployment of ground troops "should not be ruled out." Most of Kiev's allies have distanced themselves from this position, as well as the opposition in France.
