The attack struck an industrial site in the city's northeastern area.

The site included a printing press, a furniture workshop, and a paint shop.

"Three dead, five wounded and a major fire: the Russians have hit Kharkiv again," said Serhiy Bolvinov, head of the police investigation department in the region, on the social media platform Meta. He warned that the death toll could rise.

"About ten people could be trapped under the rubble," regional governor Oleg Sinegubov said on television. "According to preliminary estimates, it was a cruise missile," he said.

One body has been recovered and two others remain trapped under the rubble, the governor said. Two of the injured are in serious condition.

Rescue operations are ongoing and firefighters are trying to extinguish the fire, which has spread over an area of more than 2,000 square metres.

Located about 50 kilometres from the Russian border, Kharkiv, which had a population of about 1.5 million before the Russian invasion two years ago, has been regularly bombarded by the Russian military.
