Abandoned City Land to Fund Moldovan Projects

The 5.2-hectare land on Tighina Street will be sold to the US Embassy through an agreement. The government announces that it has initiated the process of negotiating the document, which will unblock the process by which the land in the centre of the capital, abandoned for almost 17 years, can be put to use.

The Executive estimates that the sale price will be around 15 million euros, but all final data will be made public after the team of negotiators has completed all the processes.

According to the government, the money from the sale of the land will be allocated for several important projects, such as the creation of the Center for Contemporary Culture and Art "Universul"; the repair of sports schools throughout the country; and conducting the feasibility study and designing the future National Stadium.

The sale will be made at a fair price and comes with a few mandatory conditions: keeping the gates as an architectural object of value, creating a green area on that land, and respecting height restrictions.

At the same time, the Executive announces that by April 10, the project will be approved by the ministries and the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy and European Integration. Subsequently, negotiations will begin to establish the exact text of the new agreement, including the final amount of the transaction, the height of the construction, and the money that will be provided by the American side to buy back the buildings from private owners.

In April 2022, the United States and the Republic of Moldova signed a Memorandum of Understanding to initiate the procedure for the sale of the Republican stadium property.
