Moldova Strengthens Military, Seeks New US Embassy
The Moldovan government will examine a number of critical issues at its meeting today.
These include the scheduled incorporation of over 1,400 young men into the National Army for mandatory military service, the initiation of negotiations with the United States for the purchase of property for a new U.S. Embassy in Moldova, and the ratification of a defence cooperation agreement with France.
According to a draft resolution from the Ministry of Defense, approximately 1,400 young men are scheduled to be incorporated into the National Army for mandatory military service. An additional 10 individuals will be incorporated for short-term military service. The majority of these soldiers, roughly 200, will come from the Moldovan capital, Chisinau. Concurrently, between April and July, soldiers incorporated in 2023 will complete their military service and enter the reserves.
The Cabinet of Ministers will also consider a draft law for the ratification of the Agreement between the Governments of the Republic of Moldova and France in the field of defence cooperation. This agreement would establish a joint commission that would convene annually to present a plan for bilateral defence cooperation. Previously, under the terms of this agreement, Moldovan military personnel and civilian employees have received training in French military schools. Additionally, the French government has provided financial and logistical support to the Linguistic Center of the "Alexandru cel Bun" Military Academy of the Armed Forces.
The Ministry of Education and Research will propose modifications to the Regulations for the organisation of the Republican Contest "Pedagog of the Year" beginning this year. The proposed changes would exclude the "Reflections" video presentation, the ingenuity test, and the "Homework" assignment from the competition. In their place, the competition would introduce a new component: a training seminar organised for teachers.
Finally, the Cabinet of Ministers will examine a draft resolution for the approval of the "Fund for Energy Efficiency in the Residential Sector of the Republic of Moldova" financing program. The program's implementation over the next three years is estimated to require approximately 1.5 billion lei.
The Moldovan government's meeting today promises to be a substantive one, addressing issues central to the nation's defence and educational systems. The decisions reached will have a significant impact on Moldova's future.
