Moldova Warns of Census Data Collection Scams
Authorities warn against providing bank details during census data collection. The government Telegram channel "Prima sursă" (First source) reports that citizens have encountered individuals requesting bank details under the pretence of data collection for the census.
"Census data is collected exclusively through face-to-face interviews conducted on tablets. The census questionnaire does not contain any questions regarding banking information. Only provide answers to individuals officially employed by the National Bureau of Statistics. Enumerators must present their identification and wear clothing displaying the census logo," the cited source states.
The Republic of Moldova is currently conducting its most comprehensive statistical exercise, the population and housing census. Enumerators will inquire about citizens' year and place of birth, residence, spoken language, education level, occupation, and other demographic factors.
The National Bureau of Statistics emphasises that participation in the census is mandatory. Those who refuse to complete the questionnaires and cannot be persuaded otherwise risk a fine of up to 2,500 lei.
Officials estimate that initial census results will be released within six months of its completion. They assure the public that all provided information remains confidential, protected by law, and used solely for statistical purposes.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean asserts that data from the 2024 Population and Housing Census will facilitate the transparent allocation of financial resources for the development of localities within the Republic of Moldova.
The Population and Housing Census occurs every 10 years. This vital national statistical exercise offers a comprehensive demographic overview of the country. The previous census was held in 2014 and took place over two weeks.
