Tbilisi Rallies Against "Russian Law" Threatening EU Dreams
Thousands of people marched in Tbilisi, Georgia, in support of the country's future membership in the European Union and against the passage of a controversial draft law.
The legislation, nicknamed the "Russian law" by protesters, is formally titled the "draft law on the transparency of foreign influence."
Protesters gathered at various locations throughout Tbilisi before converging on Europe Square in the city's historic centre, according to a BBC report. They view the draft law as a threat to both freedom of expression and civil society organisations in Georgia. Additionally, they fear it could jeopardise Georgia's aspirations to join the European Union, a goal that enjoys widespread support among the Georgian populace.
The ruling party in Georgia previously attempted to pass the draft law in 2023 but failed due to significant public opposition. Despite ongoing protests for the past month and appeals from Western partners, the government has already approved the legislation in two readings this year. The law is expected to be finalised during its third and final reading next week.
