Moldova's Referendum and European Integration: Key Insights
The 20 October referendum will not lead to modifications to the Constitution if it is not validated due to low voter turnout, declared PAS deputy Olesea Stamate in a broadcast on N4.
At the same time, in this scenario, the argument that the population does not support European integration will not be used, she added.
"Nothing will happen, and no chapter will be introduced into the Constitution. For example, if the referendum fails due to low turnout, this fact will not be used as an argument that the population does not support European integration. However, I do not believe that the referendum will fail," said Stamate.
Referring to the Pact for Europe, signed on Sunday, 26 May, by 12 pro-European political formations from R. Moldova, Stamate said that the document has no legal value but is considered welcome. In response to the question of why the agreement was signed by Artur Mija, the general secretary of the Government and PAS, she answered that it was the team's decision.
"It is good that more parties have signed this Pact for Europe. Colleagues considered that, at the level of decision and signatories, it is appropriate for the general secretary of the party to sign."
The document itself outlines the political commitment to achieving the objective of European integration, promoting the rule of law, and condemning the war of aggression and forcible occupation of the territories of some sovereign and independent states.
Representatives of 12 political parties from R. Moldova have signed "The Pact for Europe" to manifest their support for the European path.
