"I solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and that I will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States," Donald Trump said in his oath.

The presidential oath is outlined in Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution. The oath for other federal officials, including the vice president, is not prescribed in the Constitution.

Congress established these oaths through legislation. The words "so help me God" are not included in the constitutional oath. It is believed that this phrase was added by George Washington during his first inauguration, thus setting a precedent for future presidents. However, there is no solid historical evidence that Washington ever used this phrase, CNN reports.
