Moldova Seeks Energy Independence
Chisinau is set to secure 92% of its electricity needs from the Cuciurgan Power Plant in June.
This comes according to a forecast predicting a total consumer demand of approximately 334,613 MWh on the right bank of the Dniester for that month.
Energocom, Moldova's energy trading company, has announced a plan to address this demand. The vast majority (92%) will be purchased from MGRES, the power plant located on the left bank of the Dniester. Urban thermal power plants and renewable energy producers will contribute the remaining 8%. To specifically cover peak hour consumption, additional purchases are planned, totaling around 4,862 MWh.
This news follows the extension of the electricity purchase contract between Chisinau and MGRES, which was secured in October 2023 and remains valid until the end of this year. Under this agreement, Chisinau will procure most of its electricity from the left bank at a price of 66 US dollars per MWh.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has previously indicated that the country aims to achieve energy independence from the left bank within two years. This goal hinges on the completion of the high-voltage power line connecting Vulcanesti and Chisinau, which will establish a crucial link between the Romanian and Moldovan electricity grids.
