Moldovan Official Charged in Ukraine Smuggling Ring

A Moldovan employee of the Migration and Asylum Bureau is facing charges after allegedly organising the illegal migration of two Ukrainian citizens.

The case occurred last October. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, the 40-year-old man is suspected of being part of a criminal group. Two members of this group were convicted in November 2023 at the request of the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption (PCCOCS).

Prosecutors allege that in addition to his involvement with the group, the man transported the two Ukrainians from a park in Cahul to the border crossing point as they exited Moldova towards Romania. He then provided them with instructions on how to cross the border illegally. The Prosecutor General's Office also reports that prosecutors seized illegal earnings exceeding 100,000 lei from the group. This sum was collected from a fee of 2,000 euros per person for facilitating illegal border crossings from Ukraine and 350 euros for illegally applying the official entry stamp into Moldova.
