Agricultural Havoc: Meteorological Disasters Wreak Havoc Across the Country
Recent meteorological fluctuations have inflicted widespread damage across various regions of Moldova.
According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), hailstorms and torrential rains between May 30 and June 3 have decimated hundreds of hectares of agricultural land. Additionally, in Basarabeasca, these adverse weather conditions also resulted in the destruction of an asphalt road.
The toll of the torrential rains from May 30 to June 3, 2024, is substantial:
- In Bîrlădeni, within the Ocnița district, approximately 8 hectares of apple orchards succumbed to the deluge.
- Similarly, in Săiți village, located in the Căușeni district, 40 hectares of orchards fell victim to the unfavourable weather conditions.
- Further south, in Etulia, Găgăuzia, the precipitation wrought havoc, devastating approximately 360 hectares of walnut orchards, alongside 200 hectares of sunflowers and barley each.
Moreover, reports from the Basarabeasca district, particularly in Bașcalia village, indicate the destruction of an approximately 750-metre-long asphalt road and 70 square metres of greenhouse film. Furthermore, extensive agricultural damage ensued, affecting 62 hectares of vineyards, 448 hectares of wheat, 111 hectares of corn, 179 hectares of barley, 7 hectares of peas, and 217 hectares of sunflowers.
The regional emergency commissions are now tasked with assessing the magnitude of the material losses incurred.
