Guangdong Disaster Update: Death Toll Reaches 38 Amidst Record Rains
State television in China reported on Friday that the death toll from the severe weather that struck Guangdong Province in southern China this week has risen to 38, cited by AFP.
Two people remain missing, according to public broadcaster CCTV, which stated at noon that "search and rescue efforts for those trapped are difficult and time-consuming due to the severity of the disaster."
The heavy rainfall has impacted over 55,000 people in total, according to CCTV. The week-long rains triggered landslides and floods, causing widespread destruction to thousands of homes and numerous roads. CCTV emphasised that some areas have experienced historic flooding, the worst on record. Authorities had previously reported a death toll of nine from the floods.
China faces extreme weather conditions in some regions this year. Scientists attribute this phenomenon, which is becoming increasingly frequent, mainly to greenhouse gas emissions. China is the world's largest producer of greenhouse gases.
