Judges order the transfer of the former head of Calea Ferata, Iurie Topală, to house arrest
The former director of the Moldovan Railways, Iurie Topală, charged with abuse of office, has returned home after 3 months in Penitentiary No. 13. The Chișinău District Court ordered his transfer to house arrest for 30 days, as reported by anticorupție.md.
Emil Gaitur, press officer at the Public Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organised Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS), told the Anticorupție.md portal that the case was "in the hands of the court, and at this judicial stage, prosecutors do not have the right to challenge the preventive measure".
Former Railways Director Iurie Topală, arrested by Interpol officers from Belgium on 13 January 2021, was deported to Moldova on 3 November. He is charged with abuse of office for the benefit of an organized criminal group in connection with the mismanagement of public funds in 2015-2019.
The preliminary estimate of the prosecutor's office is that the damage caused by Iurie Topală's management amounts to 250 million lei.
