Romanian FM warns of intensified Russian hybrid threats in region
The intensification of Russia's hybrid actions against states in our region is evident, Romanian Foreign Minister Luminița Odobescu stated on Thursday in an interview with AGERPRES.
She made these remarks following her participation in the informal Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, which brought together the foreign ministers of the European Union.
The meeting included the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, as a special guest.
"We have all witnessed Russia's relentless attacks on civilian infrastructure, particularly targeting energy facilities. In this context, Minister Kuleba once again emphasised the critical importance of air defence and the need for sustained support from EU member states," Odobescu said.
She further stressed that unblocking the European Peace Facility remains "crucial" for reimbursing Ukraine's military expenses, which have been "frozen for over a year."
"The revision of the European Union's military assistance mission for Ukraine was discussed to better align it with the needs of the Ukrainian armed forces," the Romanian foreign minister pointed out.
Odobescu elaborated that Russia's massive attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure have necessitated closer coordination among allies.
"Romania will continue to support both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova in addressing challenges in the energy sector," she affirmed.
She also noted that the meeting addressed the issue of isolating the Russian Federation through sanctions.
"I stressed the importance of adopting new sanctions, including a new regime to counter Moscow's destabilising actions. This is particularly relevant concerning Russia's hybrid actions against Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, and EU member states. The recent intensification of these hybrid threats from Russia in our region is particularly concerning," Odobescu remarked.
Additionally, she highlighted the "constant" contact maintained with Ukrainian officials.
"We maintain a continuous dialogue on various issues of mutual interest. This dialogue occurs at both high levels and sectorally, involving regular discussions between the Ministers of Energy and Defense. Close coordination is essential, as our support for Ukraine remains unwavering," Odobescu concluded.
