A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 occurred in the south of Turkey, near Syria, the international media announces. The earthquake occurred at 1:17 GMT (4:17 local time, 3:17 Romanian time) and the epicenter was located 26 km east of the city of Nurdagi and 32 km from the city of Gaziantep. About 10 minutes later, also in central Turkey, a new earthquake of 6.7 magnitude followed, which occurred at a depth of 9.9. A new aftershock was recorded a few minutes later, 16 km east of Nurdagi, having a magnitude of 5.6 while the depth at which it occurred was estimated at 10 kilometers. Located in the area of major tectonic plates, Turkey is often affected by earthquakes. In 1999, more than 17,000 people died after a powerful earthquake shook the northwest of the country.
