Russia responds to Trump victory, sees no major shift in policy
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election, stressing that Moscow has no high expectations from the new American president.
"We do not have illusions about the new U.S. president or Congress, where Republicans now appear to hold the majority," the statement says. Russian officials believe that U.S. policy toward Russia remains unchanged, regardless of which administration is in power, whether it follows Trump’s "America First" approach or the "rules-based international order" championed by the Democrats.
According to Moscow’s diplomatic sources, Russia views Trump’s victory as a reflection of American citizens' dissatisfaction with the Biden administration and the Democratic Party’s agenda.
However, Moscow also highlights the deep divisions within American society, where supporters of traditional values and proponents of progressive values are nearly equally divided. Russia anticipates that Trump’s return could exacerbate internal tensions in the U.S.
Simultaneously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that Moscow will cooperate with the new administration in Washington, but will continue to staunchly defend its national interests and pursue its established objectives, including within the context of the war in Ukraine. Russia's conditions, the statement notes, are well known to the American side.
It should be noted that 78-year-old Donald Trump has been elected president of the United States. The Republican surpassed the 270 electoral vote threshold required to win the presidency, according to Edison Research projections.
