Moldova's hemp boom: Economic and environmental benefits
Moldova has authorised the cultivation of industrial hemp, a versatile crop with numerous benefits for agriculture, the economy, and the environment.
This decision follows the government's approval of amendments to the regulations governing the cultivation of plants containing narcotic or psychotropic substances.
Farmers seeking to cultivate hemp for seed, fibre, or oil production must submit an application to the Permanent Committee for Drug Control. Supporting documentation, including proof of land ownership and contracts for product sale, is required. Additionally, farmers are obligated to maintain detailed records of harvested and sold produce.
Moreover, only hemp varieties registered in the Moldovan Plant Variety Catalogue, the EU Common Catalogue of Varieties of Agricultural Plant Species, or national catalogues of EU member states will be permitted for cultivation.
"I urge the business community and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry to seize this opportunity," stated Prime Minister Dorin Recean. "These materials have broad applications across various industries, including the automotive sector. This presents a significant opportunity for Moldovan businesses, farmers, and those involved in industrial hemp component production."
Industrial hemp is a profitable and low-maintenance crop. With a short 90-day growth cycle, it enables two to three harvests annually. Furthermore, hemp's ability to absorb substantial amounts of carbon dioxide contributes to climate change mitigation efforts.
