Moldova boosts air defences against drones and missile threats

The Republic of Moldova currently has limited capacity to detect and neutralise non-threatening aerial devices but has already improved its defences against more serious threats.

This statement was made by Prime Minister Dorin Recean on the "Cutia Neagră" show on TV8. According to him, the authorities are taking steps to strengthen the defence system. However, without financial support from external partners, Moldova cannot afford a comprehensive air defence system.

"The Republic of Moldova has started enhancing its defence capabilities, prioritising protection against the most dangerous aerial threats: ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, and various bombs and munitions," stated Dorin Recean.

"In the next phase, we need to invest in detection and air defence systems to counter less threatening aerial devices," he added.

In response to reports of multiple drones being found on Moldovan territory, Recean explained that these devices do not carry explosives but accompany attack drones, such as the Shahed, with the purpose of misleading air defence systems.

"These drones, which unintentionally fall on Moldovan territory, are not dangerous due to potential explosions but pose a threat because they could injure someone if they crash into a house or person," the Prime Minister emphasised.

It is worth noting that a drone was discovered yesterday in the Ciocana sector of the capital. Last week, three other aerial devices were found in Moldova: in the village of Fîrlădeni, Căușeni district; near Borosenii Noi, Rîșcani district; and in Coșernița, Criuleni district.

The first Russian missile fell on Moldovan territory on October 31, 2022, in Naslavcea, Ocnița district.
