Victor Parlicov to meet Gazprom over gas supply to Transnistria
The Minister of Energy, Victor Parlicov, plans to discuss several topics with Gazprom representatives concerning the supply of natural gas to the Transnistrian region, following an invitation to St. Petersburg.
This announcement was made by Prime Minister Dorin Recean during a Radio Moldova broadcast.
One key topic will be the delivery of Russian natural gas to Moldova, specifically to the Transnistrian region, via an alternative route if Ukraine halts transit as of January 1, 2025. Additionally, Minister Parlicov is expected to present Gazprom with details of recent management changes at Moldovagaz. Recean also mentioned several scenarios in the event that Gazprom does not continue its gas deliveries.
"Various scenarios could occur, such as damage to Ukraine’s natural gas infrastructure or a complete halt to gas transit. There are also alternative routes for supplying gas to the left bank of the Dniester, meaning the Republic of Moldova. This is a subject Minister Parlicov must discuss with Gazprom. Another topic is the management changes at Moldovagaz, which require cooperation with Gazprom's representatives on the supervisory board to ensure these changes are implemented effectively."
Dorin Recean explained the importance of ensuring a natural gas supply to the Transnistrian region. He stated that as long as the region has gas, the right bank will benefit from electricity at lower tariffs.
"Why is the delivery of natural gas to the left bank of the Dniester important? Because it is used to generate electricity for the right bank. This ensures current electricity tariffs remain in place. It’s vital to protect this interest for our citizens and to make every effort to ensure natural gas reaches the left bank, so we can continue receiving electricity at this price."
During the broadcast, Dorin Recean also announced plans for constructing a power plant in Moldova, highlighting interest from investors. According to the Prime Minister, the country is currently experiencing growth in renewable energy production.
