Russia deploys hypersonic 'Oreshnik' missile in Ukraine attack
On November 21, Vladimir Putin announced that Russia deployed its latest medium-range missile system, the "Oreshnik," equipped with a "hypersonic non-nuclear component," in a strike on Ukraine.
According to Putin, the missile targeted a facility within Ukraine's defence industry as a response to long-range missile strikes from Western countries, which have escalated the conflict in Ukraine to a global level.
Putin emphasised the speed and effectiveness of the "Oreshnik" missiles, stating that they travel at speeds of 2-3 kilometres per second and cannot be intercepted by existing defence systems. He also mentioned that the missile strike successfully hit its intended target.
Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from its southern Astrakhan region during an early-morning attack on Ukraine. However, sources within the U.S. administration did not confirm the missile’s intercontinental range. This announcement further highlights Russia's growing military capabilities in response to Western support for Ukraine.
