A mother and her two young children from Moldova killed in Turkey's devastating earthquake

A mother and two minor children from the Republic of Moldova lost their lives in the earthquake in Turkey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MFAEI) announced. The family was living in the town of Hatay in south-eastern Turkey. MAIE says another 27 nationals are still missing while our authorities are trying to get in touch with them.

"With great regret, MFAEI hereby announces the confirmation of the death in Hatay of 3 Moldovan citizens, a 36-year-old woman and 2 minor children, members of the same family", announced the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.

Representatives of the Moldovan Embassy in Ankara are continuing their efforts to contact and communicate with Moldovan citizens living in the 10 areas affected by the earthquake.

"Since February 7, so far, embassy representatives have made efforts to contact 48 people from the list of those living in the affected regions, of which 17 Moldovan citizens reported that they are safe, 4 people have requested specialised consular assistance, and in the case of 27 people efforts to establish communication with the diplomatic mission are continuing," MFAEI notes.

According to the latest information, two citizens, holding Moldovan and Romanian citizenship, have requested repatriation assistance from the Turkish city of Malatya to Bucharest. They are medical students going to Turkey through the Erasmus programme. The evacuation operation is being carried out by the Romanian side, said Daniel Voda, MFAEI spokesman.

In the morning of 8 February, a team of Moldovan rescuers specialised in urban search and rescue entered Turkey.

Officials of the Turkish Agency for Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD) directed our rescuers to the province of Hatay on the border with Syria, where Moldovan rescuers are due to arrive this evening.
