Swedish Parliament supports Moldova's European agenda

The Swedish Parliament is to provide political support for Moldova's European integration agenda, particularly during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said so after meeting his Swedish counterpart Andreas Norlén, according to a press release issued by the Chisinau legislature.

The two heads of parliament met in Stockholm as part of Igor Grosu's official visit to Sweden. The officials talked about the situation in the region, the impact of the war in Ukraine on the Republic of Moldova and the creation of the Moldovan-Swedish parliamentary friendship group.

"We have been assured that the Swedish Parliament would continue its political support for our European agenda, especially during the Swedish Presidency of the EU Council, and would guide us with expertise in the implementation of the 9 recommendations of the European Commission and the progress of reforms in our country", said Igor Grosu.

Igor Grosu expressed his appreciation for the Swedish government's contribution of around €14 million under the Paris Support Platform. The President of the Parliament also received assurances that Sweden would continue to stand by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.

"Sweden stood by us when Moldova was embargoed by the Russian Federation and, thanks to Swedish support, our wines are now competing in the world's most important markets," said the President of Parliament.

Igor Grosu thanked Riksdag President Andreas Norlén for his participation last spring in the meeting of the Presidents of Parliaments of the Baltic and Nordic States (NB8).

"That visit, along with the seven other Speakers of Parliament, encouraged us to be even more determined in our country's project - integration into the European Union," said the Head of the Parliament.

Over the years, the Government in Stockholm has invested in a number of important projects in Moldova, including IT projects such as the ICT Centre of Excellence "Tekwill" and the e-Parliament system, in the field of medicine and in the development of the country's wine brand.

The President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, together with a parliamentary delegation, will make an official visit to the Kingdom of Sweden on 6-9 February 2023 at the invitation of his Swedish counterpart.
