A flock of swans spotted in the northern Moldova

They travel thousands of miles to wintering areas. As migratory birds, hundreds of swans are coming from northern countries where winter is harsher. At this time of year, they can be seen on lakes and rivers across the country. Dozens of swans have also been spotted by the Moldova 1 team on the banks of the Nistru River.

A magical sight can be seen in Soroca. It's not a first for swans in the region. Several dozen birds have been wintering on the banks of the Dniester River for years. Residents come to admire them, and the greatest joy is for the children, delighted to be able to bring them food.

"They are wonderful, spectacular, and charming. We often come with the little girl to admire the swans, nature is very beautiful."

"We come every day for fresh air with the baby for a walk to see the swans. It's the most beautiful view for us," people say.

Environmentalists are sounding the alarm and say these birds should only feed on seeds and it is harmful to feed them on bread.

"Bread is not good food for swans, especially rye bread. It is absolutely forbidden because the acids irritate their mucous membranes and they can get food poisoning. Likewise, sweet baked goods are forbidden because the sugar leads to fermentation in the stomach. It would be best to feed them with cereals," said Tatiana Starinciuc, specialist, Ecological Agency, Soroca.

Experts say the reason why swans winter in Moldova is the favourable climate.

National law prohibits the hunting of migratory birds. Such an infraction is fined almost two thousand lei.A magical sight can be seen in Soroca. It's not a first for swans in the region.
