ANI uncovers unjustified assets of Customs Service officials

The Moldovan National Integrity Authority (ANI) has identified violations of the legal regime concerning the declaration of assets and personal interests involving two Customs Service officials and their family members.

The total value of the unjustified assets amounts to over 1.38 million lei (~€53,000).

According to ANI, an unjustified asset valued at 1,065,863 lei, acquired between 2016 and 2024, was identified in the case of the head of a section within the Directorate for Legal Control and Enforcement, together with his wife.

Additionally, an unjustified asset amounting to 321,677 lei, acquired in 2022, was identified in the case of a female head of another section within the same Directorate, along with her family members.

ANI has referred the cases to the courts for review, and the unjustified assets will be confiscated in accordance with the current legislation.

Moreover, the two officials will be disqualified from holding public office or positions of public dignity and will be listed in the State Register of Persons with Restrictions.

The Customs Service announced in a statement to Teleradio-Moldova that it will support the procedures of the competent authorities regarding the two recent reports issued by the National Integrity Authority (ANI) concerning the discovery of unjustified assets held by the two customs officials.

The Customs Authority stated that it complies with all legal standards and actively cooperates with ANI, in the context of a cooperation agreement recently signed between the two institutions. Furthermore, representatives of the institution reiterated that one of the individuals targeted by the ANI reports has not worked within the institution since August 2024.

"The Customs Service remains firmly committed to the principles of integrity and, in this context, emphasizes its respect for both the presumption of innocence and the public servant's right to be considered innocent until a final court ruling," the statement reads.
