Russian military exercises in the Security Zone on the agenda of discussions at the JCC meeting in Bender
The Delegation of the Republic of Moldova to the Joint Control Commission (JCC) has urged the Russian Federation to uphold the principles of the peacekeeping mission established by the July 1992 Agreement and to stop any unilateral military actions in the Security Zone. This appeal was made during the JCC meeting held on Thursday, January 23, in Bender.
During the meeting, the Joint Military Command presented reports on the situation in the Security Zone for the period December 25, 2024 - January 21, 2025.
The Delegation of the Republic of Moldova reported violations of the Security Zone regime, including the organization of exercises at the end of last year by the Russian Federation military contingent within the Joint Peacekeeping Forces. According to a statement from the Reintegration Policy Bureau, the actions were carried out contrary to the approved Plan of Measures for 2024 and took place near the peacekeeping posts, instead of the permanent deployment areas. In addition, the exercises involved armored vehicles, which should have been withdrawn from service since 2003, and were conducted by officials without appropriate authorization.
“In addition, the movement of military observers who were supposed to document the violations on the spot was blocked. Thus, the current peacekeeping mechanism on the Nistru was significantly destabilized and discredited,” the cited source reports.
Also, it was reported that in the second half of 2024, locals discovered 758 explosives in the Security Zone, most of which date back to World War II, which were safely destroyed under the supervision of sappers.
