Comrat residents unite for cleanup and tree planting event

Dozens of residents from Comrat took part in the environmental campaign "Let’s Make Our City More Beautiful." They collected waste near the Ialpug River and planted around 200 trees. The event was organized by the Municipality of Comrat and GIZ Moldova.

Among the volunteers was Valentina Micotina, a retired resident who had also participated in a similar event four years ago. Back then, she planted trees. "I’m happy to see these trees growing, making everything green and beautiful in the summer," she said.

"We collected plastic and cardboard. People are helping, and I hope it stays clean," added another participant.

"Plastic doesn’t break down; it just stays in the soil," someone remarked.

"We came to clean up and help nature. I didn’t think it would be so interesting," said another volunteer.

According to local authorities, the trees planted four years ago have now grown up to seven meters tall. Previously, vegetation struggled to grow in the area due to the salty soil.

"We planted trees on a two-hectare plot here four years ago. There are many areas near the Ialpug River that could truly become the city’s green lungs," said Comrat’s mayor, Serghei Anastasov.

"We want to help people understand the importance of taking care of our home, our environment," stated Verena Zell, head of department at the German Embassy.

"We see many young people eager to contribute to their community, working now to improve the environment," added Claudia Hermes, country director of GIZ Moldova.

Around 200 residents of Comrat participated in the environmental campaign.
