Romania will purchase from Azerbaijan one billion cubic meters of gas, including for the supply of the Republic of Moldova
Natural gas for the Republic of Moldova in Azerbaijan, through Romania. This route becomes possible, after the authorities in Bucharest and Baku have reached an agreement of one billion cubic meters of gas. After meeting with the Azer leader, Ilham Aliev, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Marcel Ciolacu, announced that the natural gas in Azerbaijan will also arrive in Chisinau.
Romania will receive for a year one billion cubic meters of natural gas from the Caspian Sea. The gas will arrive from Azerbaijan in Romania through the pipes of the southern corridor. Marcel Ciolacu spoke with Ilham Aliev to supply the Republic of Moldova through this contract. The energy companies in Romania and Azerbaijan intend to build two liquefied gas terminals at the Black Sea. Azerbaijan and Romania will connect through a submarine cable over a thousand kilometers that will transport electricity. After Russia invaded Ukraine, the European market reoriented itself to Azerbaijan.
Azer President Ilham Aliev received Marcel Ciolacu, and three weeks ago he had discussions with Klaus Iohannis in Baku. At the same time, the energy companies had signed the contract for the billion cubic meters of gas. Romania is connected with all the neighboring countries and could become a regional energy hub. With the Republic of Moldova, Romania has two interconnections: Iași-Chisinau and the Transport Corridor, with a transport capacity of 20 million cubic meters per day. The southern and vertical corridors can provide the gas needs of Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
The Republic of Moldova needs about one billion cubic meters a year, except for the Transnistrian region. Romania's needs are almost 12 billion cubic meters. However, it has domestic production that usually covers 80 percent of consumption.
