Joint statement in Bucharest // Romania and the USA have pledged to support the Republic of Moldova in the context of Russia's destabilizing actions
The Republic of Moldova was the focus of the members of the delegations from Romania and the United States of America, gathered in Bucharest as part of the Romania-USA Strategic Dialogue. During the meeting, a Joint Statement was adopted in which the risk of the destabilizing actions of the Russian Federation in the Black Sea region, in particular, to the security and stability of the Republic of Moldova, is emphasized. Romania and the USA have committed to support the democratically elected authorities in the Republic of Moldova, reads the text of the Statement.
*"The Romanian and American delegations paid special attention to the potential risk of the destabilizing actions of the Russian Federation in the Black Sea region, especially to the security and stability of the Republic of Moldova. Romania and the United States remain committed to supporting the democratically elected authorities of the Republic of Moldova in their efforts to strengthen their political and economic resilience, defend their sovereignty and territorial integrity, and continue the process of European integration.
We remain committed to supporting the principles of independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and respect for international law, human rights and fundamental freedoms, as the basis of the Euro-Atlantic security architecture."*, states the joint statement of Romania and the USA adopted in Bucharest within the framework of the eighth meeting of the Moldovan-American Strategic Dialogue.
Romania and the US highlight the importance of transatlantic unity in preventing any future aggression and allowing the full potential of the Black Sea to be reached as a strategic connection between Europe and Central Asia.
"The two sides emphasized the importance of paying special attention to cooperation within NATO, for a stronger consolidation of defense and deterrence in the Black Sea region, an area of strategic importance for the Alliance," reads the Joint Statement. The Romanian delegation was led on the Romanian side by Iulian Fota, Secretary of State for Strategic Affairs, and on the American side by Dereck Hogan, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.
The US-Romania Strategic Dialogue took place against the background of the most serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security in recent decades, one year after the start of the unjustified and unprovoked war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. The Eighth Meeting of the Strategic Dialogue was agreed by the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, and the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, in the dialogue held in Bucharest, on November 29, 2022.
