UN reaffirms Moldova’s European path: a trusted partner on its road to the EU

The United Nations is celebrating 80 years since its founding, and in the Republic of Moldova—where it has been active for over 33 years—it reaffirms its role as a strategic partner in the European integration process. The UN supports reforms, combats violence, and strengthens social resilience. The topics of European integration and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda were discussed with guests on the "Public Space" program on Radio Moldova.
European integration and sustainable development go hand in hand
Cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the UN is increasingly closely linked to the country's European path. The sustainable development objectives and the community acquis complement each other, providing a coherent direction for internal reforms.
"The UN complements our European path and is therefore a reliable partner," said Victor Lăpușneanu, Head of the Multilateral Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Over 75% of the UN objectives correspond to the European community acquis. The UN Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Moldova, Yesim Oruc, emphasized that this compatibility confirms a natural evolution: European integration and sustainable development go hand in hand.
"Our social policies, digitalization, energy efficiency are directly linked to the objectives that the Republic of Moldova has on its path to accession to the European Union," noted the UN representative in Chisinau.
Visible results and unified cooperation
In recent years, the Republic of Moldova has managed to build, together with UN agencies, a valued cooperation model. Coherence between authorities and development partners is considered one of the most important institutional achievements.
“One of the success stories of the Republic of Moldova, represented by your leadership, is the fact that everyone is rowing in the same direction: EU member states, non-member states, development partners – we all coordinate support for the same objectives,” said Yesim Oruc.
A relevant example of this collaboration are the programs dedicated to gender equality and the prevention of violence against women, carried out together with the Government of the Republic of Moldova.
“This is a large area of activity and UN agencies have a huge commitment to countering gender-based violence. November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and UN agencies will partner with local organizations, together with the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection,” the UN Resident Coordinator said.
The War in Ukraine and Moldova’s solidarity
The support provided in the context of the war in Ukraine is a special chapter of the UN-Republic of Moldova collaboration. Our country has demonstrated a remarkable spirit of solidarity, becoming a regional example of humanitarian response.
“The Republic of Moldova’s response to the refugee crisis was superb. This small country with a big heart is no joke. The response was valuable and I am proud that UN agencies, for example, the UNHCR, were able to immediately organize the necessary activities. War is the greatest violation, not only of peace, but also of human dignity. And the impact of war on the Republic of Moldova goes beyond the refugee problem,” said Yesim Oruc.
The support was focused on protecting vulnerable groups and creating sustainable development solutions.
80 years after the founding of the United Nations, the message from Chisinau is firm: multilateral cooperation, solidarity, and peace remain essential in an increasingly fragmented world.
The Republic of Moldova continues to be an example of a responsible partner, and the UN – a constant ally on its path towards a fairer, safer and European society.
The United Nations was founded on October 24, 1945, by 51 states, following the end of World War II, with the mission of maintaining international peace and security and promoting the development of friendly relations among nations, based on respect for the principle of equal rights and the self-determination of peoples.
Today, 193 states are part of the UN. The Republic of Moldova became a member state on March 2, 1992, joining shortly after declaring independence from the Soviet Union on August 27, 1991.
Through the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the UN aims to achieve 17 goals that constitute a universal call to action to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.
