Kristalina Georgieva: IMF is willing to increase financial assistance for the Republic of Moldova
Measures to increase the resilience of the energy sector were on the agenda of the discussions held by the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, with the Director General of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva.
"President Maia Sandu emphasised that currently the Republic of Moldova is going through the most severe energy crisis in its existence, and the goal of the authorities is to help people and businesses cope with high energy prices," reads the press release of the presidential institution.
The Director General of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, mentioned that the IMF remains open for collaboration with the Republic of Moldova and is willing to increase financial assistance for our country in order to overcome the crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine.
The meeting took place in Washington during the visit undertaken by the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu.
TRM.MD recalls that recently an IMF mission visited the Republic of Moldova in the context of the second evaluation of the program supported by the Credit Mechanism (ECF) and the Extended Financing Mechanism (EFE). The authorities of the Republic of Moldova and the IMF reached an expert-level agreement on the necessary economic policies. Thus, the total amount of disbursements made under the program will constitute approximately $287 million. The agreement is to be approved by the IMF's Board of Executive Directors in January 2023.
