Moldovan rescue teams respond to over 80 emergencies amid severe wind gusts
Moldova's General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) responded to over 80 incidents in the last 24 hours. Emergency teams were deployed to 34 locations specifically to manage the aftermath of gale-force winds.
In the capital, Chișinău, crews cleared fallen trees from residential yards and blocked roadways in eight separate districts. The intervention ensured that traffic flow was restored and immediate dangers to residents were neutralized.
Nationwide infrastructure recovery
Rescue teams operated across 17 districts, including Fălești, Rezina, and Cahul, to remove branches and trees from power lines and national highways. These actions were critical in preventing prolonged power outages and maintaining road safety.
In Durlești, emergency responders secured hazardous glass panels on a high-reach terrace. Meanwhile, in Chișinău, crews inspected a residential building on Nicolae Costin Street after concrete balcony sections fell from the 11th floor.
Structural damage in Comrat
Heavy gusts partially destroyed approximately 100 square meters of a metal tile roof on a three-story building in Comrat. Firefighters worked to secure the remaining structure and cordoned off the area to protect pedestrians from falling debris.
The State Hydrometeorological Service has extended the Yellow Warning for high winds on Monday, December 29. Wind speeds are expected to reach between 15 and 20 meters per second across the entire country.
Safety recommendations for citizens
The IGSU urges the public to exercise extreme caution with ignition sources, as uncontrolled fires can spread rapidly in high winds. Citizens are also advised to avoid touching downed power lines.
Authorities recommend avoiding areas with old trees, advertising banners, or unstable structures. Motorists should refrain from parking vehicles near tall buildings or trees that may be compromised by the ongoing gusts.
In case of an emergency, citizens are encouraged to call the 112 service immediately.
