Christ is Risen! Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter today
Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter today - the feast of light and joy, considered the greatest feast of Christianity, signifying the Resurrection of the Lord. The Easter celebrations last for three days.
Easter is preceded by a long period of fasting, and the last week of Lent, called Passion Week, celebrates the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.
On Easter Eve, Christians prepare their basket of goodies and go to the consecration of the dishes, and on Easter morning, everyone washes their cheeks with a white and a red egg. This ritual symbolises strength and purity.
At the same time, the faithful also break red eggs, which symbolise the new life received through the Blood of the Saviour.
On this day, adults and children go to visit relatives or neighbours with the greeting Christ is Risen! Also, according to tradition, people wear new clothes and shoes which would mean that the soul is renewed.
