EU will soon announce list of persons sanctioned for attempts to destabilise Moldova

The European Union will come in the near future with a list of persons and entities to be sanctioned for attempts to destabilise the Republic of Moldova. This was announced by Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu at a press conference, referring to the political agreement on the creation of a sanctions regime reached yesterday by EU foreign ministers.

"The biggest news is that, yesterday, EU Foreign Ministers, in the Foreign Affairs Council, adopted the legal basis for the EU to be able to sanction individuals and entities that try to destabilise the Republic of Moldova. Later, the EU will come up with a more concrete list, but the most important news today is the adoption of this legislative framework. In order to prepare this EU measure, we have been systematically exchanging views with our European partners for many months to reach this stage, where the EU has approved the necessary framework to help the Republic of Moldova strengthen its democracy, including through the adoption of this sanctions package, which will be further detailed with additional announcements from the EU", said Nicu Popescu.

The initiative to create this political sanctions regime was launched by the head of Romanian diplomacy, Bogdan Aurescu, at the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) in February. According to him, the sanctions regime will help increase our country's security and resilience.

At the same time, the Romanian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Romania was already working with the Moldovan authorities on the first list of persons to be sanctioned.

Also yesterday, MEP Siegfried Mureșan said that the regime should enter into force as soon as possible and be applied as harshly as possible.

"This is the only way we can really help Moldova in the fight against those who want the country to remain in place, dependent on Russia and easily controllable", says the MEP.

Foreign ministers of EU member states met in Luxembourg for the Foreign Affairs Council. Discussions on the Republic of Moldova took place in the context of the geopolitical consequences of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.
