Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Moldova: Chisinau and Bucharest draw up list of people to be subject to EU sanctions
Romania is already working with the Moldovan authorities on the first list of persons to be proposed for sanctions under the sanctions regime. The announcement was made by Romania's ambassador in Chisinau, Cristian-Leon Țurcanu.
"The establishment of this sanctions regime in record time - the fastest process of adopting a sanctions regime in the history of the EU - contributes to increasing the security and resilience of the Republic of Moldova, being a concrete tool in this regard, but will also be a measure that will enhance the security of Romania and its citizens," the diplomat said on his Facebook page.
On Monday, President Maia Sandu welcomed the EU's decision to sanction those who destabilise the situation in Moldova. According to the presidency, restrictive measures could also be applied to people involved in the misappropriation of public funds, who would be able to take control or seriously affect the work of state institutions.
Last week, the European Council adopted a new framework for targeted restrictive measures, which gives the EU the possibility to impose sanctions against persons responsible for supporting or implementing actions that undermine or threaten the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Moldova.
