United States donates over $1.3 million worth of electricity generators to Moldova

Residents of Chisinau may feel safer in the event of a nationwide power cut, as happened last November. This is after Termoelectrica SA received from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) a batch of generators with capacities ranging from 2 kW to 125 kW, the Energy Ministry reports.

The total power of the equipment received or to be received in the coming days by Termoelectrica is about 1 MW. Also, dozens of generators donated by 🇺🇸 the US Government will reach CET Nord in Balti, Moldelectrica, Apă-Canal and 22 district hospitals. The total cost of the state-of-the-art generators is $1.3 million.

Energy Minister Victor Parlicov thanked the US Government for its support to Moldova in modernising its energy sector. "We are now much more prepared for possible crises than we were a year - a year and a half ago. And this is part of our effort to prepare for the coming winter. Thanks to external support, we have time to think about other strategic, longer-term actions for the development of the sector," Minister Parlicov said.

The acting director of Termoelectrica SA, Vasile Leu, said that most of the generators will be used in thermal power plants, other units will be used as mobile points in case of power disconnection. "The total power of all the generators received is about 1,000 kW (1 MW), which is a good thing, as most thermal power plants did not have generators. With this equipment we are raising our power supply category and will ensure the safety and continuous quality of the heat supply", said Vasile Leu.

The generators are diesel and will be used for uninterrupted power supply to critical social and energy infrastructure in case of emergencies.
