Citizenship rules altered: Moldova extends acquisition period
The period for reclaiming or acquiring citizenship of the Republic of Moldova has been extended from 20 days to six months.
This decision was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. According to Mircea Eșanu, the director of the Public Services Agency (PSA), since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, the number of Russian citizens desiring Moldovan citizenship has significantly increased, although an exact figure was not provided. Of all the requests, 70 percent come from Russian citizens, while 20 percent come from Ukrainians.
"If before the war we had cumulatively 11-12 thousand requests, then by the end of 2023, over these two years, we had almost 20 thousand requests. The overwhelming majority are those coming from the Russian Federation. But there are individuals born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova or who are descendants," specified Mircea Eșanu, the director of PSA.
Moreover, the head of PSA noted that during this period, there have been several cases where dubious individuals attempted to obtain Moldovan citizenship and even presented false documents.
"If during the years 2020-2021 we identified 7-8 cases of fraudulent attempts to obtain citizenship, during this period we already have 30 identified cases. Often, the authorities in Ukraine or the Russian Federation do not respond promptly, but without their confirmation, we cannot grant citizenship until we ensure that their data is accurate," Mircea Eșanu further stated.
The decision pertains to citizenship offered to individuals born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova until 1991, as well as to children born to parents who are Moldovan citizens.
