Canada to impose media sanctions to combat Russian disinformation

Canada could impose more sanctions on media and individuals to combat Russian disinformation and corruption. The statement was made by Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, in Chisinau, at the meeting with her counterpart, Mihai Popșoi.

"Russian disinformation undermines new democracies. I want to tell you that we have sanctioned six TV stations and a number of individuals who help promote Russian disinformation, including Shor and people associated with him. We are going to do a lot of things, we have to work including in the field of military cooperation, I think we can do this very well", said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Mélanie Joly.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs from Chisinau, Mihai Popșoi, thanked the Canadian government for "the robust sanctions mechanism that is being implemented to leave no room for impunity for those who damaged the country's budget, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, and now, being abroad, I believe that they can enjoy impunity. The regime of international sanctions will create the conditions for those who brought suffering to the Republic of Moldova to pay for it," said the minister.

We remind you that, last year, Canada sanctioned oligarchs and politicians from the Republic of Moldova who are linked to the Russian Federation. The measure was taken to prevent possible destabilization in the region from Russia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada announced this at the time. Among the sanctioned persons is the leader of the "Sor" party, as well as former parliamentarian Vladimir Plahotniuc and businessman Veaceslav Platon.
