No majority in Chisinau: Council splits into 3 factions
The Chisinau City Council (CMC) finally established three factions after several failed attempts, ending a period of political deadlock.
The councillors split into the National Alternative Movement (MAN), the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), and the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), resulting in no clear majority.
Both PAS and MAN hold 20 seats each, while PSRM has 6. Zinaida Popa, Serghei Afanasenco, and Adrian Lebedinschi will lead their respective factions. Smaller parties also hold seats, including the Communist Party, Renaissance Party, Dignity and Truth Platform Party, and Our Party.
The meeting saw proposals from PAS councillor Zinaida Popa to hear department heads and discuss financing for extended-day school groups. However, tensions arose when parents protested the suspension of these programs, chanting for justice and funding.
MAN councillors countered, accusing PAS of manipulating the situation for political gain. They argued constructive dialogue could have resolved issues within the allotted time.
This meeting, convened by Mayor Ion Ceban, follows failed attempts by PAS to hold sessions with a minority quorum. With the formation of factions, the CMC can now officially operate but may face challenges due to the lack of a dominant bloc.
