Moldova Blames Russia for Election Interference

Moldova's Intelligence Service (SIS) has uncovered evidence of a significantly intensified campaign by Russia aimed at derailing the country's efforts to join the European Union (EU) and disrupt upcoming elections.

SIS chief Alexandru Musteața made this announcement at a press conference, revealing a three-pronged Russian strategy spanning 2023 to 2025. According to the agency's information, the first stage involved attempts to undermine the 2023 local elections.

Currently, the focus appears to be on influencing the 2024 presidential election and a potential referendum on EU accession. The SIS fears Russia might also attempt to "denigrate" institutions and pro-EU candidates.

The most concerning element, however, might be the alleged long-term goal: gaining control of Moldova's parliament in 2025 by supporting pro-Russian political parties.

Musteața's statement highlights Moldova's growing concerns about foreign interference in its democratic processes and its efforts to integrate with the West.
