Moldova Invests in Rural Sanitation Upgrade
A neighbourhood on the outskirts of Comrat is seeing the start of a major infrastructure project as construction begins on a new sewerage system.
The system will eventually connect to the city's existing network, providing approximately 300 households with access to modern sanitation facilities. The Comrat City Hall is leading the project in partnership with the Regional Development Agency, with funding provided by the National Fund for Regional and Local Development.
Addressing a Long-Standing Need
The targeted micro-district is home to about 1,300 people who have historically lacked access to a centralised sewerage system. Residents have relied on individual septic tanks, creating an ongoing expense and inconvenience.
"We've never had a proper sewerage system here," one resident explained. "We all use septic tanks and have to pump them out monthly, and each time it costs 250 lei. We've been waiting for this – it's a big improvement."
Construction workers are making steady progress, aiming to complete the project on schedule. "The work is progressing well, and the weather allows us to continue," stated Oleg Hîncota, the site foreman.
Improving Sanitation Coverage for Comrat
The Comrat municipality administration anticipates that the project will significantly increase the city's sewer coverage from 37% to 50%. Mayor Serghei Anastasov expressed satisfaction with the work of the Chisinau-based contractor: "After the implementation of this project, we'll be able to connect over 300 households in this micro-district to the sewerage networks. The contractor is doing an excellent job; they began work immediately after the contract was signed."
The project, scheduled for completion within five months, includes building a pumping station and approximately 10 kilometres of sewerage lines. The total cost of the works is 10 million lei, with local authorities contributing 1.5 million. The primary funding source is the National Fund for Regional and Local Development of the Republic of Moldova.
