75 years ago Treaty establishing Council of Europe was signed

75 years ago, ten European countries founded the Council of Europe. For three quarters of a century, the organization has played a crucial role in promoting democracy and human rights in Europe. The Secretary General of the Council, Maria Burić, sent a message in which she emphasized the need to establish legal standards in the field of democracy and the rule of law, so that the people of the 46 member states live in peace and security, referring in especially in Ukraine, which continues its resistance in Russia's war of aggression.

"In Ukraine we are doing everything we can to support people, including our new Damage Register, which became fully operational last month, recording the loss and damage Russia is causing on the ground. This is the first step towards granting a comprehensive compensation mechanism, which recognizes that without accounting there can be no justice, and without justice - there is no lasting peace", said the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejcinovic Buric.

The situation in Ukraine, but also the environment and the influence of artificial intelligence, are defining challenges of the 21st century, which require immediate action, Buric claims.

"The future of Ukraine, the impact of artificial intelligence and the quality of our environment are among the defining challenges of our time. Acting now is vital not only for us, but also for the generations to come," the official concluded.

The Council of Europe is an international, intergovernmental and regional organization, established on May 5, 1949 and bringing together all the democratic states of the European Union as well as other states in central and eastern Europe.
