Ion Munteanu's Inauguration: New General Prosecutor Takes Office

Ion Munteanu will be inaugurated as the general prosecutor on Saturday, June 1st.

The ceremony will be held at the headquarters of the General Prosecutor's Office and will include the swearing-in of the general prosecutor, followed by speeches from the president, the general prosecutor, and other dignitaries. This announcement was made in a press release issued by the General Prosecutor's Office.

The General Prosecutor is appointed for a single term lasting 7 years.

The Superior Council of Prosecutors decided to nominate Ion Munteanu for the position of general prosecutor to the president of the country following his success in the competition. On Thursday, May 30th, the CSP conducted the interview phase, and based on the evaluation sheets, the interim general prosecutor, Ion Munteanu, obtained the highest final score: 9.21 points. Octavian Iachimovschi, the deputy chief prosecutor of the Anticorruption Prosecution Office, scored 8.80 points, while prosecutor Alexandru Cernei scored 7.92 points.

The position of general prosecutor remained vacant after Alexandr Stoianoglo was suspended in early October 2021, and he was subsequently removed from office at the end of September 2023. The presidential decree to remove him from the position of general prosecutor was based on the CSP members' decision regarding the unsatisfactory evaluation of his activity in May 2022. The interim position was first filled by Dumitru Robu, followed by Ion Munteanu.

According to the latest asset declaration, in 2023, Munteanu received a salary of approximately 485 thousand lei. The prosecutor's family resides in a house covering an area of 105.8 square metres, which he acquired through a donation contract.

Members of the Munteanu family own a 2019 Dacia Duster, purchased in 2024 for 215 thousand lei, and a 2014 Mercedes, with a declared price of 50 thousand lei. Additionally, another family member possesses a 2011 Mercedes, which he uses under a "translative possession and use" contract.
