Putin May Join Swiss Talks Despite ICC Mandate, Says Amherd
Russian President Vladimir Putin will be able to travel to Switzerland to participate in hypothetical negotiations without being arrested, despite the mandate issued by the International Criminal Court, assured Swiss President Viola Amherd on Sunday, after the summit hosted by her country dedicated to peace in Ukraine, as reported by Agerpres.
"The mandate provides exceptions in case of negotiations," explained Amherd in a press conference after the meeting.
After the summit, which both Switzerland and Ukraine, the two co-organizers, deemed a success due to the large number of leaders who expressed support for the Ukrainian cause, the president of the host country emphasised that Switzerland is also willing to dialogue with other countries that declined participation, such as China.
In turn, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis affirmed that his country will inform Russia and other countries about the results of the meeting.
He mentioned in the final press conference, quoted by Xinhua, that most decisions made at the conference cannot be implemented without Russian participation.
The Swiss head of diplomacy also indicated that it is possible that the discussions targeting peace in Ukraine hosted this weekend in his country, in the luxury resort Burgenstock, will continue at a location that has not yet been established, but at a date before the November presidential elections in the USA.
