Chișinău schools see increase in Ukrainian refugee enrollment
The number of Ukrainian refugee children attending schools in Chișinău, Republic of Moldova, is on the rise.
As of now, 1,353 Ukrainian students are enrolled in the city's 151 primary and secondary schools, according to Deputy Mayor Angela Cutasevici during a recent municipal operational meeting. Additionally, 370 children from refugee families are currently enrolled in kindergartens throughout Chișinău.
Deputy Mayor Cutasevici reported that a new model for integrating Ukrainian refugees has been introduced at the "Taras Shevchenko" School in the Râșcani district. This school has received the highest number of applications from refugees seeking education in their native language. At the "Taras Shevchenko" School, native Ukrainian teachers are employed in four classes, delivering instruction in Ukrainian. Out of the 287 students enrolled at this institution, 212 are refugee children, representing 74% of the total student body.
At the beginning of the 2023 school year, 929 Ukrainian refugee children were enrolled in educational institutions across Chișinău, with the majority placed in primary classes. This academic year, 31,790 students have been admitted to the first grade throughout the Republic of Moldova.
