Sandu emphasises public participation in EU referendum
Moldovan President Maia Sandu engaged in further consultations with civil society groups on February 2nd, regarding the upcoming referendum on EU membership.
This follows her initial request to parliament at the end of 2023.
"It's crucial for this democratic process to be as representative as possible, ensuring the success of this pivotal moment in Moldova's journey towards EU membership," emphasised President Sandu, reiterating the importance of public engagement.
The consultations, launched on February 2nd, will continue through the coming days, involving representatives from the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Platform and other non-governmental organisations.
Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu confirmed the referendum's status as "constitutional" and announced its coincidence with the 2024 presidential elections. The exact date is yet to be determined by parliament.
As per Moldova's electoral code, constitutional referendums serve to revise the nation's constitution. This will be the first time Moldova holds a referendum specifically on EU accession.
